We are pleased to introduce BALI BYA, who we think has the power to impact millions of people's lives. The first online marketplace dedicated to bringing together vendors in Bali and Indonesia with customers from across the world has been developed by BALI BYA in collaboration with PayPal.

Background

While exploring Bali, we came across thousands of vendors and producers of the most exquisite and distinctive goods who lacked an online shopping option. We believe this represents a huge missed opportunity for both the Indonesian population at home and the millions of people around the world who adore the wonderful goods this region has to offer.

We passed through communities where the production and selling of the most exquisite handcrafted goods we have ever seen are the main sources of income, but not a single individual in the hamlet sells their goods online. The village's economic strategy consists of tourists passing by, appreciating their items, and stopping to buy something. You can imagine what happened to sales when tourism stopped as a result of events like the Bali bombings, volcanoes, and again during the coronavirus; there were zero sales and no way for these villages to make money to feed themselves until the planes brought tourists back. In addition, they have a somewhat religious belief that someone will visit the village who will want to make a significant wholesale order that will keep the entire village busy for months.

We were curious as to why none of these vendors offered their goods for sale online. Since everyone in Bali, regardless of their occupation, seemed to be carrying a smartphone, we knew it wasn't a lack of internet connectivity. However, our research revealed the following major causes:

The population lacks fundamental eCommerce training, and there are few IT professionals in the area.
The majority of people still use cash and are unfamiliar with online banking.
In Bali, creating a website is highly expensive.
Given the seemingly endless platforms available to us in the west, such as eBay, Etsy, Amazon, Shopify, drop shipping, etc., these problems appear relatively easy to solve. However, Indonesia is lagging behind the times, and even though the people of Bali can access these platforms online, they aren't actively working to directly assist the locals in the area.

Further research revealed that there are numerous local platforms, but they are mostly made to facilitate trade within the local community rather than linking Indonesia with the rest of the globe as Alibaba did for China, which they say supported its rise by selling goods all over the world.

We then turned to social media to see if we could spot any indications of the need for a platform of this kind and discovered that there were thousands of requests every day from consumers wanting to buy products from Bali, but the interest never translated into sales because there was no secure and convenient platform to complete the transaction, leaving both the buyer and seller unhappy and unable to adequately trade.

Before we embarked on creating BALI BYA we asked ourselves the following questions:

  1. Would an online platform help to connect buyers with the manufacturers of the unique products from Bali?
  2. Would retailers around the world buy from Indonesian manufacturers as an alternative to products from other countries such as China?
  3. Would existing trade agreements like Australia and Indonesia Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA) benefit from the technology?
  4. Would the platform positively affect the lives millions of people around the world?

We were confident that the answers to these questions were affirmative, so we began speaking with Bali sellers to find out if they would be interested in using a platform designed specifically for Bali sellers that included a free online store, integration with secure payment processing, and also a free training academy that concentrated on teaching the essential eCommerce skills.

As a result of the overwhelmingly favourable response from merchants in Bali, BALI BYA was established, and significant funds were invested in developing the technical platform in addition to months of PayPal compliance work. A Facebook network was created to discuss the BALI BYA idea and launch the process of bringing buyers and sellers together while the technical work was being done. We know we are onto something exceptional since in just eight weeks, the group has expanded dramatically to over 1,800 members of buyers and sellers who are ready to start trading on the site. We are confident that this innovation will be widely embraced very soon.
